Musical Angel, by Rosso Fiorentino
I often wonder of the music in heaven. How much more glorious could it be, given freedom from mortal burden? What consists of angelic worship? and perhaps most of all - what music does God our Father create?
“For my soul delighteth in the song of the heart; yea, the song of the righteous is a prayer unto me, and it shall be answered with a blessing upon their heads” (D&C 25:11–12).
These verses came after a command to select hymns and make a collection suitable for worship in the early years of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I believe there is great utility in understanding the power of music in worship outside of explicitly religious vocal music....
Years later, during the Saints' journey west to Utah, they were again given a command to worship God through music:
"If thou art merry, praise the Lord with singing, with music, with dancing, and with a prayer of praise and thanksgiving" (D&C 136:28).
There is something about the intentional and beautiful sound vibrations of music that thins the veil & softens the heart, making each of us more receptive to the Holy Spirit. Joining together to listen to or participate in music making has an incredible unifying affect, and, if all are of a willing heart & mind, one can feel the choirs of angels in attendance....
Over the years I have become especially attentive to this sort of harmonic resonance, in which certain music seems to align one's entire body and soul with that of God's. I pray that I may be able to strike such frequencies, for it is my experience that the Holy Spirit tends to speak deeper and with greater power through the medium of music.
